Previously unreleased music by Throbbing Gristle is to be the focus of a new box set forthcoming on Mute.
TG Berlin centres around a special series of live events that the group played at the Volksbühne venue in Berlin across New Year’s Eve in 2005 and New Year’s Day in 2006. The former event saw the band play a standard live set, while the latter took in an improvised live soundtrack to Derek Jarman’s 1981 short film In The Shadow Of The Sun. While in Berlin for those gigs, they also recorded two final songs and a further 48-minute piece of new music.
The box set will be split across four CDs, a Blu-ray DVD, a 10-inch vinyl record and a booklet featuring unseen photographs from the time of the Berlin gigs. Recordings of the two Berlin gigs, the further studio material captured in the city and an additional rehearsal for the In The Shadow Of The Sun performance are all included in audio form, while the Blu-ray features video from the New Year’s Eve live set.
Listen to previously unreleased track ‘Scabs & Saws’, which Throbbing Gristle recorded while in the studio in Berlin around the time of the aforementioned gigs, below.
The release of TG Berlin follows recent reissues by Mute of Throbbing Gristle’s TGCD1 and The Third Mind Movements, which came out in August.
Mute will release TG Berlin on December 6, 2024.
