The annual Piano Day, which takes place on the 88th day of the year to reflect the 88 keys on a standard piano, is set to take place at the National Gallery in London on March 31.
Curated by Sofia Ilyas of FLOAT, this year’s proceedings take in a programme of events and performances including music and more, inspired by the Gallery’s exhibition After Impressionism: Inventing Modern Art. Those taking part include electronic music composer Yaw Evans, beekeeper and large-scale installation artist/educator Lily Hunter Green (pictured above), and pianists Karim Kamar and Vetle Nærø. There will also by a unique performance by Japanese electronic music artist Hinako Omori in collaboration with contemporary dancer Chihiro Kawasaki of Neon Dance.
Curator Sofia Ilyas said in a statement: "It’s an exceptional lineup of artists pushing the boundaries with bespoke pieces celebrating the piano – expect the sounds of bees emanating from a home found in the instrument, a contemporary dance performed throughout, and much more.
"As a Pakistani woman in the UK fascinated by the history of art since studying an Art A-level, The National Gallery has always been an inspiring and aspirational environment. In each visit throughout the years since, whilst growing my career in music, I’ve continued to be in awe of its ability to progress culture and to come full circle and be hosting an event here feels surreal."
All of Piano Day’s programme is free to attend. You can find more information about this year’s event here.
