Phew Returns To Mute For New Album, ‘New Decade’

It's the Japanese artist's first record the label in almost 30 years

Experimental vocalist Phew is lining up new material for Mute for the first time in nearly three decades.

Due out in October, New Decade takes in six tracks and sees the artist, real name Hiromi Moritani, switch between English and Japanese lyrics. Her last release with Mute came in 1992 in the form of the Our Likeness LP, and before that she collaborated with the likes of Can and Ryuichi Sakamoto on various projects. You can watch a video for the new album’s lead track, ‘Into The Stream’, above.

"About 30 years ago, ‘new’ was synonymous with progress and things getting better," Moritani says of the album’s title. "During the ’80s, and up until the ’90s, things progressed along a line from past to present to future, but I think that’s changed, especially since the start of the 21st century. Personally speaking, I’ve stopped being able to see a future that extends from the present."

Mute will release New Decade on October 22, 2021.
