This year has found Hessle Audio – the label headed up by Pearson Sound, Ben UFO and Pangaea – taking steps outward towards a broader remit, following the release of last year’s justly acclaimed 116 & Rising compilation. Via 12"s from Elgato, Objekt and Bandshell they’ve reached outward into darker, noisier territories, flirting with Actress-style dilapidated techno, brutal dubstep/techno hybrids and, with the latter’s recent release, music that’s further from the club than ever before.
Now they’ve announced the the label’s next release will be a three track 12" from co-founder David ‘Pearson Sound’ Kennedy, which will appear in shops on 10th September, and follows on from his recent collaborative work with Joy Orbison and Boddika. Thus far, as with most Hessle releases, none of the three have received substantial airplay, which is a pleasant change in a scene where tracks are often overplayed before they ever see vinyl. However, ‘Clutch’ (which appears on the 12" along with ‘Underdog’ and ‘Piston’) was recently premiered on Hessle Audio’s Rinse FM show, and it’s rather metallic and far more abrasive than his previous work, though with the same lean sense of funk that’s marked out his music over the last couple of years. It sounds sonically aware of the connections Hessle have fostered with contemporaries like Kowton and Kassem Mosse, and bodes very well for the rest of the EP.
