South London noise-rock outfit Part Chimp have unveiled the first track from their forthcoming album iV. ‘Namekuji’ is the first piece of new music to be heard from the eardrum annihilators since announcing an amicable break-up in 2011.
The album will be released on April 14 via Mogwai’s Rock Action Records and follows from their 2009 behemoth of a record, Thriller/. The four piece have never done anything in half-measures. With a keen focus on intelligent song craft and dynamics, they have earned a reputation for being one of the most influential bands operating in the noise/stoner rock sphere in the past decade, establishing themselves as a crucial, if physically damaging, live experience to behold.
‘Namekuji’ proves that and shows us that a five-year hiatus has done nothing to soften Part Chimp’s penchant for Goliath riffs and endlessly satisfying ferocity. Opening with a brief, off-kilter piano, the track doesn’t take long to launch into an onslaught of churning drums, guitars that would not have felt out of place on an early Pelican record, and a howled vocal that burrows right into the core of the listener.
For those new to the raucous machine that is Part Chimp, tQ made a handy guide of their entire back catalogue after the release of their live album, Reduce to Clear. Prepare your ears and check that out here.
