Oneida Talk Yes, Flaming Lips, ATP NY

And Kid Millions discusses _Rated O_ follow-up

Oneida’s Kid Millions has told the Quietus that his group had to get their thinking caps on to come up with something exciting to do at this September’s Flaming Lips-curated ATP after they were asked to play an album by Yes in its entirety.

"Initially The Flaming Lips were like ‘we want you to cover Fragile by Yes’. And we were like, ‘NO, I don’t think so. I don’t mean to be negative about it, but it was I’m sorry, we’d love to play your ATP but it’s just not appropriate for us’.

Apparently Coyne & co asked if Oneida would play another record, but the idea didn’t appeal to the Brooklyn fivepiece. "We thought about it and were like, you know what, thank you but we should maybe do our own thing and not perform the festival. But we mulled it over, and I said ‘let’s do something really fucking insane. Let’s propose to do a full day and kind of transport the spirit and influence of our studio the Ocropolis to the festival ground and do what we do do a lot of: improvising and collaborating and record it all, and just play all fucking day’."

And LO! It shall come to pass at the Flaming Lips-curated All Tomorrow’s Parties, which takes place in upstate New York between September 11th and 13th this year. Good Kid Millions has also also hinted to the Quietus that the recorded fruits of their playing "all fucking day" might influence the next installment of Oneida’s bodacious Thank Your Parents trilogy. How they top this year’s astounding Rated O is anyone’s guess…

"We’ve really set ourselves up, right?" laughs Millions. "We’re wondering that ourselves. We’ve done a couple of these shows in our studio, we can fit about 40 people in there and we’ve recorded some live performances and a lot of improvising, and it seems like an interesting place to go for the next release.

"There’s a lot of stuff we have and a lot of ideas kicking around, and I imagine this ATP is going to be fruitful, so it could get shaped by it for sure."
