A DAT recording of a DJ set played by Aphex Twin at New York City club Limelight in the early ’90s has emerged online. You can hear it above.
As Electronic Beats reports, it’s believed that the recording dates back to either 1991 or 1992, and it has been shared by Lofidelic Records, which is based in New Jersey.
"Back in the early ’90s when techno was just starting to explode in NYC, I snuck a portable DAT recorder into the Limelight nightclub when Richard D. James, the Aphex Twin, was DJing a very rare live set," says a text accompanying the mix.
As you might expect from a bootleg club recording, the sound quality isn’t the best, but the recording offers an insight into the music Aphex Twin was playing in DJ sets early into his career. Featured are tracks from Dave Clarke, Aphex Twin’s own ‘Phloam’, a track from his Bradley Strider alias and more.
