Nyege Nyege Festival has revealed the full lineup for its 2023 edition, which returns to Jinja, Uganada in November.
Taking place across four days, the festival’s lineup once again places a heavy focus on artists affiliated with the Nyege Nyege Tapes label and its Hakuna Kulala sub-imprint. Among them are core Nyege Nyege collective DJ Kampire; Angolan kuduro pioneer DJ Znobia, Nigerian rapper and MC Aunty Rayzor; and Tanzanian singeli artist DJ Travella.
The festival will also, as ever, welcome a number of artists from outside of the African continent, including Parisian ethnomusicologist and Nyege Nyege Tapes affiliates Judgitzu; Amsterdam’s DJ Marcelle; London-based DJ and Club Yeke label founder Tash LC; and French-Japanese sound artist and DJ Mika Oki.
This year’s Nyege Nyege Festival sees the event move to three new sites along the Nile River: The Jinja Golf Course, Source of the Nile and the Jinja Showground. Camping will no longer be available on site but will be offered by partnering hotels. A two-day East African music conference will kick things off, before the full music programme runs across four days.
The festival returned from a COVID-19-enforced three-year break in 2022 at a new site, Itanda Falls. This brought about a number of problems, however, and organisers have since described the site as "too far and too complicated" to return to for 2023.
Nyege Nyege Festival will take place from November 9 to 12, 2023. Find more information here.
