NTS Radio has confirmed a number of new residents joining the station for summer 2020.
Amongst those announced to host a series of radio shows via the online station over the coming months are Yellow Magic Orchestra’s Haruomi Hosono, black midi, Moor Mother, upsammy, Yaeji, Erol Alkan, and Mount Kimbie. The team behind Smithsonian Folkways, the nonprofit record label arm of the Smithsonian Institution, will also dig into their archives for a number of special shows.
Alongside today’s residents announcement, NTS has also launched its first public listeners support scheme. NTS Supporters, which is live now, sees the station make steps towards what a press release describes as "a more sustainable [revenue] model for 2020," with the station in the past having generated revenue through merchandise, ticketed events, branded partnerships, and funded projects.
NTS Supporters offers a customisable package starting at £2.99 a month, where listeners are encouraged to pay what they can afford, monthly or annually. Paying supporters will receive certain perks as a thanks for their help.
The money raised from NTS Supporters will go into the various costs associated with running the station, including music licensing, streaming infrastructure and radio production. NTS will also be giving 50% of the proceeds directly to show hosts. The station’s announcement does make clear however that it has no plans to put its radio services behind a paywall.
