Ninja Tune Honoured With AIM Award

25 years on from its founding, Ninja Tune will be honoured with The Innovator Award at AIM Awards in September

Ninja Tune will be honoured with ‘The Innovator’ award at this year’s AIM Awards in September with the label’s Matt Black, Jonathan More and Peter Quicke selected to receive the award.

The Innovator Award aims to celebrate the work and achievements of an artist, label or business person who is”pushing the boundaries of independent music”. Founded by Black and More (of Coldcut), and run for 23 of its 25-year history by Quicke, AIM says that “Ninja Tune has firmly established itself as one of the most credible independent labels in the UK”.

As well as the main Ninja Tune label and brand itself, it’s also responsible for labels such as Big Dada, Counter Records and Werkdiscs (Actress’ label), as well as being associated with Brainfeeder (Flying Lotus’ label). Among Ninja Tune’s current ranks are The Bug, Kelis, Amon Tobin, Run The Jewels and Young Fathers.

Speaking of AIM, Matt Black said that “being part of AIM allows us to keep that independence whilst at the same time having the strength of a community”, while Jonathan More said that “it’s a real honour to get this award. AIM is so crucial in fighting the indie labels’ corner – making that collective voice heard where it counts.” This year’s AIM Awards will take place at the Brewery, Clerkenwell on September 8.
