Nick Cave and Warren Ellis were on BBC Radio 4’s the Today programme this morning discussing their audiobook for Cave’s new novel The Death Of Bunny Munro.
Cave said that although he was a fan of the form he found it "disappointing", adding "There’s a wonderful art form there that’s never exploited in an interesting way. I thought something remarkable could be done with the audio book."
Cave and Ellis bemoaned the fact that the standard audio book often seems to just be Austen bookended with classical music and listened to by truckers, and said theirs is a more peculiar affair: "the book is like a hallucination anyway, or it becomes more and more surreal, but this is psychedelic," Cave said.
Asked what would make an interesting combination for an audiobook, Cave said "what about The Female Eunuch by Germaine Greer with accompanying tuba. Or the Story of O with bagpipes. The possibilities are endless."
