Motown Songwriter Nick Ashford Passes Away

Author of hits for Diana Ross, Chaka Khan and more dies of cancer at the age of 70

Nick Ashford, the Motown songwriter who co-wrote singles for Chaka Khan and Aretha Franklin, has died at the age of 70, report BBC News this morning. He passed away yesterday in New York, after battling with throat cancer.

Ashford wrote a host of tracks alongside his wife Valerie Simpson, including Khan’s ‘I’m Every Woman’ and The Supremes’ ‘Ain’t No Mountain High Enough’, and had a hit in the eighties themselves with ‘Solid (As A Rock)’. Ashford and Simpson were inducted into the Songwriters Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.

He is survived by his wife and two daughters. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.
