The first part of BBC Radio 4’s new four-part series New Weird Britain is set to air this Monday (June 3).
Each of the four parts are presented by our own John Doran and produced by Alannah Chance, with the series set to travel around the UK, focusing on the urban fringes of major cities and post-industrial towns, as well as the rural and coastal underground, to find the people responsible for making innovative ‘weird’ music outside of the mainstream music industry.
New Weird Britain will feature interviews with musicians such as Gazelle Twin, Richard Dawson, Guttersnipe, Sophie Cooper, Hawthonn, AJA, Rhodri and Angharad Davies, Natalie Sharp, Kelly Jayne Jones and many others. There will also be guest appearances from Cosey Fanni Tutti and Jennifer Lucy Allan during the series.
The radio show aims to cover multidisciplinary artists that are incorporating film, dance and performance art into their work also. It will look into some of the venues and promoters that are showcasing these musicians’ work, taking in non-standard venues like furniture warehouse-turned-arts centre New River Studios and festivals such as Supernormal and Supersonic.
John Doran will talk about the series on tonight’s edition of Late Junction on BBC Radio 3 which will air from 11PM.
