Sherwood & Pinch, the collaboration between longstanding dub reggae pioneer Adrian Sherwood and dubstep innovator Rob Ellis, have premiered a new track from their forthcoming Man Vs. Sofa LP. ‘Lies’ can be heard above.
The album will be released on February 24 via their respective labels On-U Sound and Tectonic Recordings. ‘Lies’, featuring a guest vocal from Lee “Scratch” Perry, is a lush affair that makes for an atmospheric breather in the depth of record that is loaded with magisterial tension and propulsive energy.
The track, as the pair explain, “brings pathos and a particularly soulful vocal performance from the Upsetter, laying down his teachings over morse code blips, blue note horns and a 2-step rhythm – a distant relative of the classic 80s and 90s Bristol sound”.
The album features a cast of other collaborators such as Primal Scream’s Martin Duffy, Dizzee Rascal collaborator Taz and Sugarhill Gang’s Skip McDonald. Man Vs. Sofa is their second LP and the fruit of a collaboration that began five years ago after they became fans of one another’s live sets. After deciding to combine their unique approaches to the styles they operate within they released a series of dubplates and their 2015 LP ‘Late Night Endless.
Speaking of how this record came to life and the progress they have made as a duo, Sherwood said: “I hope it resonates with listeners as much as it does with us. Pinch and I have developed a proper great sound together and this is a real step forward.”
You can pre-order the album here and check them out at Bangface Weekender on March 19.
