American avant-garde vocal icon Diamanda Galás will return this March with her first new music since 2008’s Guilty, Guilty, Guilty .
Reemerging now with ‘O Death’, an expertly frenzied reinterpretation of a traditional American folk song, Galás’ voice lunges forth, ensnaring the accompanying jazz-piano and taking her captive audience on a guided tour of the rapture.
‘O Death’ will appear on All The Way, one of two new albums that Galás will be releasing on March 24. The album is a collection of six masterful reworkings of traditional blues and jazz compositions including a chilling solo piano interpretation of Thelonious Monk’s ‘Round Midnight’ and a version of ‘Pardon Me I’ve Got Someone To Kill’ by country singer Johnny Paycheck. As well as All The Way, Galás will be releasing a live album, At Saint Thomas the Apostle Harlem, a performance from May 2016 during which the composer and vocalist performed a series of what she referred to as “death songs”. During this performance Galás reinterprets poems by Cesare Pavese and Ferdinand Freiligrath, as well as giving renditions of songs by Jacques Brel and a vocal rework of jazz saxophonist Albert Ayler’s ‘Angels’.
