Earlier this week, Depeche Mode announced details of their new album, entitled Spirit, trailing the announcement with the news that they would be sharing the first track from it today. True to their word, that track, called ‘Where’s The Revolution’ is now online, and you can check it out above.
Spirit is due on March 17 and will be followed by a mammoth European tour from the band. The new track’s themes are openly laid out in Martin Gore’s lyrics drawing on themes of government and patriotism critically, adding "you’ve been lied to". The album was produced by James Ford of Simian Mobile Disco.
In a new interview with Rolling Stone, Dave Gahan said: "I wouldn’t call this a political album because I don’t listen to music in a political way. But it’s definitely about humanity, and our place in that."
He adds: "We called the album Spirit, because it’s like, ‘Where’s the spirit gone?’ or ‘Where’s the spirit in humanity?’ We considered calling it Maelstrom – that was a bit too heavy metal."
