LISTEN: New Algiers

The band return with their second album

Algiers have announced details of their second album, entitled The Underside Of Power. You can stream the album’s title track above now.

The release marks their second album following on from their 2015 self-titled debut, which was also released on Matador. The album’s lead single sees the band maintain their deeply soulful roots while also taking in Suicide-esque tones at points.

The band enlisted Portishead’s Adrian Utley, as well as Ali Chant, for production duties on the new record with recording mostly taking place in Bristol. The album is said to take in touchstones of Southern rap, Northern soul, gospel, IDM, industrial and more, while subject matters include "oppression, police brutality, dystopia and hegemonic power structures".

The album’s release also marks Algiers’ first as a four-piece having enlisted Bloc Party drummer Matt Tong to join them, with live shows lined up across the year, including support slots this June across Europe for Depeche Mode. They will play headline shows at Brighton’s Patterns on June 6 and London’s Shacklewell Arms on June 7. The album can be pre-ordered here and will be released on June 23.
