MBV Drummer Says Gigs Not Loud Enough

Colm Ó Cíosóig writes to The Irish Times to complain about decibel limits

Colm Ó Cíosóig, drummer for My Bloody Valentine, has written to The Irish Times with a complaint about gigs not being loud enough anymore.

Writing about his recent experiences, specifically at Dublin’s 3Arena, he says: "I have been to two very expensive gigs there recently and have experienced annoyingly cheap and thing-sounding representations of what would have been all-engulfing wonderful realities."

Not just limiting his gripe to the 3Arena, he cites the venue as "an example of this new reality that is castrating culture and charging a fortune for it," adding that "the decibel-limiting on the PA system is very sad indeed".

The two gigs in question were by Black Sabbath and Neil Young with Ó Cíosóig saying that "the likelihood of reaching ecstasy was slim" owing to the sound troubles. My Bloody Valentine are noted for their loud gigs, with earplugs often handed out at entry to the venues they play.
