The history of electronic music is the focus of a new online exhibition, Music, Makers & Machines, hosted via Google Arts & Culture.
Birthed as a collaboration between numerous arts organisations, including the Barbican, Black Cultural Archives, and the label XL, Music, Makers & Machines takes in more than 13,000 archival photos and videos, written features, and 3D scans of synthesisers and other instruments.
Among the various stories covered are the pivotal role of Black and LGBTQ+ people in the foundations of electronic music, the emergence of music scenes in cities such as Berlin, Chicago and Detroit from the ’80s into the ’90s, and the development of sub-genres such as dubstep. The exhibitions also looks at the scenes currently in cities such as Bristol, New York and Bucharest.
