Moor Mother Launches New Release Series, ‘ANTHOLOGIA’

Funds raised from the releases will be donated to the Afrofuturist Affair's Futurist Fund

Moor Mother and Swedish musician Olof Melander have launched a new series of releases called ANTHOLOGIA via the former’s frequent label home, Don Giovanni.

"I was interested in creating a project that could directly support individuals that needed support/medical equipment," Moor Mother, AKA Camae Ayewa, says in a note on her Bandcamp page. "I reached out to collaborator and friend Olof Melander with the idea to create a music project that could generate funds to be available for those in need with a focus on disability justice. Centring black women, elder community members, and trans and queer community members with needs to medical equipment or supplies."

ANTHOLOGIA releases will be available digitally and on limited cassettes. 200 cassette copies of the first release in the series, ANTHOLOGIA 01, have been made available via Don Giovanni. Proceeds will go to the Philadelphia-based Afrofuturist Affair’s Futurist Fund.

"The digital sales will first cover the cost spent on making [the release] which was $600 and then all money will go to the Futurist Fund started by the Afrofuturist Affair in 2011," Ayewa says. "Our goal for this tape is $700 for a motorised wheelchair; anything over that will be split between those who need."

Alongside Ayewa and Melander, ANTHOLOGIA 01 features contributions from a number of guest artists covering trumpet, clarinet, piano, flute, and vocals. You can find the full credits here.

The launch of ANTHOLOGIA follows on from the release last week of a live recording of Moor Mother and Nicole Mitchell’s 2018 Le Guess Who? set, which featured in our latest round of Bandcamp tips.
