Monolake, the dub techno project of German producer Robert Henke, has a new album on the way, titled Studio.
Comprised of 10 tracks constructed in Ableton Live, the widely-used DAW that Henke helped co-create, the album was mostly pieced together from sounds created using the artist’s collection of hardware synths. You can listen to lead cut ‘Global Transport’, which features field recordings captured in 2012 during various train trips taken in Italy, below.
In a statement, Henke said: “In the final stage of creating this album, I worked on all tracks at the same time, listening to them in the context of the others. A lot of things changed again as a result. Suddenly previously completely fine endings and beginnings made no sense anymore and needed to be reworked.
“I always aim to create an album which is one long journey, and where the successions of pieces feel more like movements of a symphony. I removed elements, add new ones, and often only at this very late stage I started to understand which parts in each piece are central.”
This is Henke’s first studio album as Monolake since 2020’s Archaeopteryx. Considered an essential project in the development of the dub techno sound, Monolake has previously included additional members Gerhard Behles and Torsten Pröfrock.
