LISTEN: Mika Vainio, Ryoji Ikeda & Alva Noto Collaborate Live

Mika Vainio, Ryoji Ikeda and Alva Noto explore characteristically abstract electronics on track lifted from only live recording captured between the trio

With the recent news that Alva Noto’s label Noton would oversee the release of the only known live recording between the late Mika Vainio, Ryoji Ikeda and Alva Noto, AKA Carsen Nicolai, himself, a track from that recording is now available to stream exclusively below.

‘Movement 2’ centres around the kind of abstract, harsh electronics you might expect from a coming together of the three producers and sound artists, built around digital glitches and murky sub bass.

It’s one of 11 pieces to feature on Live 2002, which was captured during a performance at Newcastle’s BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art. The performance marked the only live collaboration between the trio, and its release has been dedicated to Vainio who passed away this year.

"Mika was not only a friend and collaborator, but also an inspiration for my work as an artist," says Carsten Nicolai. "This is a celebration of his contribution to our work."

Live 2002 is due out on January 20, and Noton are also promising the digital release of two other collaborations between Vainio and Nicolai in early 2018: MIKRO MAKRO by Ø + NOTO and wohltemperiert by Ø + noto.
