Not much has been seen or heard from experimental pop outfit Micachu & The Shapes since the release of their second LP Never way back in 2012, but today Rough Trade announced that the trio and their refurbished instruments will be releasing new album Good Sad Happy Bad on September 11. For now, take a listen to ‘Oh Baby’ above.
The reunion is said to have come as a bit of a fluke arising from an hour-long improv session that happened at a rehearsal, and which has become the basis of the new album. Singer Mica Levi, drummer Marc Pell and keyboardist Raisa Khan are taking a more off-the-cuff approach to the new record, with excerpts from collaborative improvisations being developed into songs at a later stage. The album maintains The Shapes’ alternative take on pop, but the more relaxed and immersive recording process has given them an even greater energy, according to the press release. They will be embarking on a tour later this month, beginning at Broadcast in Glasgow on July 15; full details and tickets are here.
