Matana Roberts is set to release the fifth volume of their ongoing Coin Coin series.
The run of releases sees the US artist explore African-American history through ancestry, archive and place, and Chapter 5: in the garden… tells the story of a woman in Roberts’ ancestral line, who died following complications from an illegal abortion. "I wanted to talk about this issue, but in a way where she gets some sense of liberation," Roberts said of the subject matter. To mark the album’s announcement, they have shared the opening three pieces from the record – ‘we said’, ‘different rings’ and ‘unbeknownst’ – which clock in collectively at around 10 minutes and can be listened to just below.
Constellation will release Coin Coin Chapter Five: in the garden… on September 29, 2023.
