Seattle’s psychedelic global voyagers Master Musicians of Bukkake have announced the release of a new full-length album, marking the follow-up to their Totem trilogy of LPs, the last of which was released in 2011. Entitled Far West, it’s set for release through Important Records in June 2013 and includes six tracks.
They’ve so far provided us with a teaser – the video for opening track ‘White Mountain Return’, made by Logan Owlbeemoth. The track continues forward in the vein of the final track of the Totem trilogy, ‘Failed Future’, with a harsh, synthetic feel, more overtly electronic than earlier releases.
In an interview with the Quietus around the release of Totem 3, the band’s Randall Dunn hinted that the sound of that album may have been leading them in this direction. "We talked about it and we realised that there’s no other way you can express extreme horror than through a Giallo soundtrack or a John Carpenter thing," he said. "You certainly can’t do it through something that sounds like a fake raga! And also it was a commentary about replacing some of the more traditional instruments with absolute synthetics. Everything is synthesised, you know, so that’s the end. But it’s also the beginning of our next wave of stuff too, in a lot of ways – so I don’t know, maybe our future has already failed by [using synthetic instruments on that piece]!"
The album’s tracklist (see below) also suggests that the work of Argentinean author Jorge Luis Borges may well have been an inspiration – in particular his story The Circular Ruins, towards which the titles ‘Circular Ruins’ and ‘You Are A Dream Like Your Dreamer’ seem to hint.
