Marie Davidson Reveals New Album, ‘Renegade Breakdown’

The Montreal artist's next album sees her form a trio under the name of L'Œil Nu

Marie Davidson has shared full details of her next album as part of the newly formed trio L’Œil Nu.

Titled Renegade Breakdown, the album was recorded by Davidson alongside two long-term collaborators from Montreal’s DIY scene: Pierre Guerineau and Asaël R. Robitaille. (Davidson is married to Guerineau, and the pair make up the duo Essaie Pas.) Above, you can watch a lyric video for the album’s title track.

Davidson acts as frontwoman, lyrics-writer and synth player for L’Œil Nu. Renegade Breakdown, and Davidson’s decision to produce and tour her next album as part of a trio, is described in a press release as "a reaction to years in which she spent most of her life on the road, navigating the club and festival lifestyle: the airports, the late nights, the lost or damaged gear – often alone."

Renegade Breakdown comes two years on from Davidson’s last album, Working Class Woman. It was while extensively touring that record across Europe and North America that Davidson reached a "tipping point," and became disenfranchised with club culture.

From there, she, Robitaille and Guerineau pushed forward with an idea that they had come up with the previous year: to make music inspired by pop, with the French signer Mylène Farmer name-checked as a particular inspiration.

Ninja Tune will release Renegade Breakdown on September 25, 2020.
