Manchester Venue Night & Day Launches Campaign To Stay Open

The venue, which has been open for 30 years, was recently served with a noise abatement notice by the local council

Independent Manchester venue Night & Day has launched a campaign following a recent threat of closure from the local council.

The venue, which has been open in Manchester’s Northern Quarter for 30 years, was recently served with a noise abatement notice following complaints, the venue says, from somebody that moved into a property nearby. "As the [COVID-19] restrictions lifted and life retuned to the surrounding Northern Quarter area, we were able to put on our first live music event," the text on Night & Day’s Change.org petition reads. "The resident visited us next day and has since reported us to [Manchester City Council] a number of times. We have met the resident a number of times to explain what we do and that nothing has changed operationally to how we operated pre-lockdown and the 28 years prior to that."

The text continues: "We ask for Manchester City Council Licensing to remove our noise abatement notice and for the Council to address the real issue here, which is that housing with ill-considered planning and construction has been approved and built next to a pre-existing live music business. Night & Day is located at 26 Oldham Street. Over the past 15 years, flats have been built or existing buildings converted to flats around us with no real thought or consideration to the pre-existing business, building and what it does."

Requesting that the venue not be labelled by the council as "a ‘nuisance’," Night & Day’s statement goes on to address that the venue received important funding from Arts Council England during the COVID-19 lockdown as a means of supporting the space throughout its enforced closure, recognising Night & Day as "a place of cultural significance."

Night & Day previously successfully fought against a noise abatement notice in 2014, but if complaints continue to come in from the resident, it may be forced to close this time. The venue originally opened in November 1991, taking over the site of a former chip shop.
