Mai Mai Mai is the alias of Toni Cutrone, based in the South of Italy, who has been exploring noise music and drones under the moniker over the last five years through a number of releases with labels such as Boring Machines and Yerevan Tapes.
His most recent release, Φ (Phi) , an LP released late last year via Italy’s Boring Machines label saw the producers push towards the harsher reaches of techno retaining a firmly refined sound in the process, and above you can watch the video for album track ‘Magois’.
Directed and edited by Giuseppe Lombardi and Paolo Scarpelli, the clip balances Cutrone’s punishing experimentations with images of natural beauty, having been filmed between Iceland, the Natural Monument of Ancient Galeria, Cape Circeo and the construction site of the Calatrava’s Olympic Pools in Rome, making for somewhat incongruous viewing.
Φ is the third and final installment in Mai Mai Mai’s Mediterranean trilogy. You can read Tristan Bath’s thoughts on the album, as part of his Spool’s Out column from late last year, here and purchase the record directly from Boring Machines here.
