Less than a year after the release of his ambitious reimagining of Dario Argento’s giallo Suspiria, Italian filmmaker Luca Guadagnino may have found his next cinematic venture.
According to Variety, Guadagnino is in talks to direct and produce an updated adaptation of William Golding’s novel Lord Of The Flies, which has been gestating for Warner Bros since 2017 when the studios reacquired the film rights.
Initially proposed as a gender-bent retelling of the story focusing on a group of schoolboys stranded on a desert island and confronted with their own savagery, the upcoming project is now said to be keeping closer to Golding’s original story.
Lord Of The Flies has been adapted for the screen twice to date, by Peter Brook with a stark monochrome version in 1963, and by Harry Hook in 1990 under the WB name.
Guadagnino broke into the mainstream sphere with the worldwide acclaim of Call Me By Your Name, the filmmaker’s screen adaptation of André Aciman’s novel focusing on a blossoming gay relationship. He went straight into Suspiria, which premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2018, and is currently helming his first TV project We Are Who We Are, an HBO miniseries.
