Next month, Sonic Cathedral release ‘What’s Holding You?’, the new single by Mexican psych outfit Lorelle Meets The Obsolete. They’ve been working on their third album Chambers, set to hit shelves in 2014 following this year’s Corruptible Faces, and this is the initial glimpse of that LP, so we’re excited to give it its first spin – have a listen below:
It’s founded on a mesmeric, driving interlock of ramped-up bass and guitar grind over which Lorelle, aka Lorena Quintanilla, lays down a dead-eyed, claustrophobic vocal, fittingly enough for a song about how Mexico City commuters “try to convince themselves and others that they are not alienated”. Just after the two-minute mark, though, she and The Obsolete (Alberto González – their name is equal parts Seinfeld‘s fictional ‘Rochelle, Rochelle’ film and Twilight Zone episode ‘The Obsolete Man’) go stratosphere-bound, letting a particularly excellent tone of gnarled guitar (all given some production lustre by none other than Sonic Boom, who mastered Chambers) wend its way through a thickly-phasered psych coda.
Says Lorelle of the record: “In the last few years we’ve had a lot of things to say, and for the time being we feel more comfortable expressing ourselves by making music rather than talking or using any other way of communication.”
‘What’s Holding You?’ is out on natty limited edition blue vinyl 7" and digital download on September 23, with ‘Medicine To Cure Medicine Sickness’, their entry on Sonic Cathedral’s Psych For Sore Eyes EP from this year, on the B-side – head to the label’s website for more.
