The Cure have shared further details of their long-awaited 14th studio album, Songs Of A Lost World.
Following on from weeks of teasing the new record via postcards sent to fans, pub signs and cryptic web tasks, the band have unveiled the album’s lead single, ‘Alone’, which marks their first new release in 16 years and can be listened to below.
In a statement about the single, The Cure’s Robert Smith said: “It’s the track that unlocked the record; as soon as we had that piece of music recorded I knew it was the opening song, and I felt the whole album come into focus.
“I had been struggling to find the right opening line for the right opening song for a while, working with the simple idea of ‘being alone’, always in the back of my mind this nagging feeling that I already knew what the opening line should be… as soon as we finished recording I remembered the poem ‘Dregs’ by the English poet Ernest Dowson… and that was the moment when I knew the song – and the album – were real.”
The Cure have been teasing songs from Songs Of A Lost World on their 90-date, 33-country ‘Shows Of A Lost World’ tour in recent years, and will reveal the album’s full tracklist over the coming weeks via a dedicated website for the record.
The band will also soon release live versions of another two new songs, ‘And Nothing Is Forever’ and ‘I Can Never Say Goodbye’, on eco-vinyl. It’s not yet known whether their non-live versions will appear on the new album.
Fiction / Polydor will release Songs Of A Lost World on November 1, 2024.
