The Eccentronic Research Council and their frequent collaborator Maxine Peake have released a new track on election day to lend support to the Labour Party.
Peake takes the lead on a redux version of ‘The Masque Of Anarchy’, a political poem by Percy Bysshe Shelley written in 1819.
The words were originally written as a call for freedom after the Peterloo Massacre, in which cavalry charged into a crowd of at least 60,000 people who had gathered in Manchester to demand the reform of parliamentary representation killing 15 and injuring as many as 700.
Seen as one of the first modern statements of the principle of nonviolent resistance, the poem is read by Peake and set to eerie, unsettling electronics by the band.
On her official Facebook page, Peake shared a quote from the poem, which reads:
Rise like Lions after slumber
In unvanquishable number
Shake your chains to earth like dew
Which in sleep had fallen on you-
Ye are many – they are few
