Colin Stetson will release his reimagining of Górecki’s ‘3rd Symphony’, entitled Sorrow, early next month and ahead of its release, you can check out an extract from it right now.
The three-part symphony is Górecki’s most widely known work with Stetson’s version contrasting the sombre minimalism of the original composition with contemporary and dissonant instrumentation.
The original piece was written in 1976 and debuted the following year. Górecki is known for being one of the most important modernist composers of the 20th century having developed elements of minimalist composition.
On Sorrow, Stetson teams up with guitarist Grey McMurray who has worked with the likes of John Cale and Gil Scott Heron whilst Stetson’s now familiar collaborator and Arcade Fire member
Sarah Neufeld also features in the piece playing violin. The pair have worked together on numerous past projects including the soundtrack for the 2013 film Blue Caprice. Sorrow will be available from April 8 via Kartel Music Group.
