Brooklyn-based multi-instrumentalist Ashley Paul recently released her latest album, Line The Clouds, via REL Records. It’s a striking record, moving seamlessly from near silence to abrasive, high-pitched passages that scream right into the inner ear. "Her voice and lyrics operate as only one part of a greater whole," we wrote. "They serve to add extra layers of texture and imagery to ceaselessly shifting backdrops of saxophone and clarinet, guitar and skittish, agitated percussion." We asked fellow Stateside textural explorer Holly Herndon to interview Paul for us last month – you can read the feature in full here.
Now Root Strata co-founder Jefre Cantu-Ledesma has reworked ‘Line The Clouds’, which we’re happy to offer you a first listen to below. It doesn’t so much deconstruct Paul’s original as mask recognisable fragments of the song in a cloud of scraped strings, reverberation and fog.
Ashley Paul’s Line The Clouds is out now via REL Records.
