New Mexico’s A Hawk And A Hacksaw recently furthered their sonic exploration of Eastern Europe by composing a live soundtrack to screenings of Shadows Of Forgotten Ancestors, the 1964 film by Ukrainian director Sergey Paradjanov.
Expanding the work with the help of Deerhoof’s John Dieterich at the mixing desk, the band’s Jeremy Barnes and Heather Trost are set to release them in a double album, You Have Already Gone To The Other World: Music Inspired By Paradjanov’s Shadows Of Forgotten Ancestors – have a listen to the title track below:
The text accompanying the announcement gives us the intriguing pointer that the film’s "mix of pagan echoes of pre-Christian Europe, traditional Orthodox Ukrainian rituals, the blood feuds and drama of an isolated village, good and evil, magic and love, have inspired A Hawk and A Hacksaw to push their music in these directions". What this sounds like gets revealed on April 2, when the album’s released via AHAAH’s own LM Dupli-cation label.
