Laibach Detail New Album, ‘Wir Sind Das Volk’

The record collates music from the theatrical production of the same name

Laibach have a new album on the way via Mute.

Out in March, Wir sind das Volk (ein Musical aus Deutschland) collates Laibach’s music for the acclaimed theatre production of the same name. (Its name translates to "We are the people," and it is based on the writings of playwright Heiner Müller.) The production premiered at Hebbel am Ufer (HAU) theatre in Berlin in February 2020, with three shows taking place before it was halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The band have since taken part in a Slovenian version of the same production, and performances will resume at Berlin’s HAU and in other European cities from March.

In a statement about the album, Laibach said: "We followed Heiner Müller’s own strategy of cutting and rearranging the material, taking his texts and putting it into another context, rebooting it with music, in order to drag the audience into it or alienate them from it. Music unlocks the emotions and is therefore a great manipulative tool and a powerful propagandistic weapon. And that’s why a combination of Heiner Müller, who saw theatre as a political institution, and Laibach, can be nothing else but a musical."

Mute will release Wir sind das Volk (ein Musical aus Deutschland) on March 25, 2022.
