Camden Venue KOKO Damaged By Fire

The club had been closed for renovations

Camden music venue KOKO has been badly damaged in a fire.

The London Fire Brigade said that the dome on the roof of the club has been destroyed in the blaze, but the rest of the building was fortunately saved. 60 firefighters helped contain the fire, which broke out just before 9pm GMT on Monday (January 6) and was brought under control around five hours later. No injuries have been reported.

"Firefighters’ quick action and hard work in the early stages meant the fire was contained to the roof and saved the rest of the building," said Station commander Jon Lewis.

The venue had been closed for renovation and was due to reopen in March. KOKO owner Olly Bengough said he was "deeply saddened" by the fire. "We’ll be doing our best to get the redevelopment of this iconic building back on track," he added.

KOKO has become an iconic music venue for London since opening as the Camden Theatre in 1900. It’s since undergone numerous names and owners, and hosted the likes of Madonna, The Rolling Stones and Prince over the years.
