Kode9, AKA Hyperdub label head Steve Goodman, has installed a 40,000-watt soundsystem in Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall.
The system has been installed as part of an exhibition by Cuban artist Tania Bruguera. She has enlisted Goodman to provide sound design for the exhibition which involves playing low frequencies from the system, alongside a heat-sensitive, colour-altering floor and an invisible gas that can force those checking out the exhibition to cry.
The exhibition is open in Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall from today (October 2). The gallery’s director Frances Morris told The Guardian that Bruguera is attempting to encourage visitors to "really think about the contemporary migration crisis, taking it from an anonymous and media-filtered narrative around statistics to a more palpable and deeply emotional understanding".
