Kevin Martin and Christian Fennesz have confirmed details of a new collaborative album between their King Midas Sound and Fennesz projects. You can listen to ‘Waves’ taken from the album above right now.
The album, entitled Edition 1, is set for release on September 18 via Ninja Tune. It is the first full-length project of Martin since the release of Angels & Devils late last year under his The Bug moniker while Fennesz’s last release came in the form of Bécs on Editions Mego, also last year. King Midas Sound is comprised of Martin, singer and poet Roger Robinson and vocalist Kiki Hitomi and the three are currently working on an album of their own to follow their 2009 debut on Hyperdub.
The record is made up of improvised guitar tracks, samples and unreleased material from Fennesz’s personal archive. A release accompanying the album’s announcement says that "in the wake of Kevin’s last Bug album Angels & Devils, he wanted to create a record focused on kaleidoscopic sonic beauty, bathed in the bluest emotional lyricism." Three more volumes of the ‘Editions’ series are set to follow from King Midas Sound with collaborators on each yet to be announced.
Speaking on Twitter today in a joint conversation between tQ’s John Doran, Kevin Martin and Christian Fennesz, Martin said "I think Endless Summer was the first [Fennesz] record I heard in full. It was my kind of melancholy", adding that "when we approached [Fennesz], we knew he operated on our wavelengh, but with different tools. His sound is intrisically linked with deep emotion." Martin and Fennesz also confirmed plans for the two acts to play live together with the first show announced to take place at Incubate in Tilburg next month.
