Ken Camden – one quarter of Chicagoan rock experimentalists Implodes – is gearing up to release his third solo album. Dream Memory will be out on Kranky on June 15, and sees him again returning to somnolent territories (picking up, at least in name, where Implodes’ 2013 record Recurring Dream, left off). Alongside Camden’s main instrument, the guitar, this record sees him using the ‘Vocaltron’ (yes, you guessed it, a kind of vocal mellotron), using samples of Angel Olsen and Emily Elhaj’s voices.
He’s already trailed the album by revealing the track ‘Curiosity’, and now we’ve been given a look at the video. A loping bassline of sorts hoves into earshot over shaded layers of guitar, some tremulously babbling, others faintly-heard spectral swells, forming something that feels curiously placeless, a track that exists very much in its own space, a sense the video, travelling down a digitised grid and passing through geometric shapes, seems to tack onto.
