Last night Aberdeen singer-songwriter Kathryn Joseph won the Scottish Album Of The Year Award, along with £20,000, for Bones You Have Thrown Me, And Blood I’ve Spilled, her debut album.
The award is something of a surprise to Joseph, though probably not to her listeners; in a recent interview with The Skinny, Joseph said of the album sessions “I never felt like we were making something beautiful. I just thought my songs were shit, and that this is all really embarrassing.”
Kathryn beat out an impressive shortlist, featuring albums from indie heavyweights Belle & Sebastian, public vote winner Paolo Nutini and the genre-bending trio Young Fathers, among six other worthy acts. She says in the same interview that it’s the live performances that make it all worthwhile: “Being in that moment is the only time that none of this feels weird at all.” The award comes from the Scottish Music Industry Association in partnership with Creative Scotland.
