Kate Bush has issued a statement clarifying her political stance following the publishing in 2016 of quotes which led many to believe she supported Theresa May and the Conservative government.
She says that the printing of the comments in 2016 in an edition of Canadian magazine Maclean’s "could make it seem like I am a Tory supporter, which I want to make clear I am not."
In that original interview, responding to a question about Hillary Clinton and the role of women in power, Bush was quoted as saying: "We have a female prime minister here in the UK. I actually really like her and think she’s wonderful. I think it’s the best thing that’s happened to us in a long time. She’s a very intelligent woman but I don’t see much to fear."
In a statement issued via her website, Bush has said that the quote was used "out of context" and described the confusion that followed as "deeply frustrating." She adds that her comment was "not meant to be political but rather was in the defence of women in power."
