John Martyn Dies

1948 - 2009

Musician and composer John Martyn has died at the age of 60. A post on the singer’s website carried the simple statement: "John Martyn 11th September 1948 – 29th January 2009. With heavy heart and an unbearable sense of loss we must announce that John died this morning."

Martyn was born in England and raised in Glasgow, before moving down to London where he became involved in the folk world. His first album London Conversation was released in 1968, though it was his 1973 tribute to Nick Drake, Solid Air, for which he is best known.

Just weeks ago, the singer was awarded an OBE in the New Year list. A cause of death is yet to be announced.

The Quietus is currently listening to Solid Air on Spotify in remembrance. Check the site tomorrow for an obituary piece.
