John Grant Returns With New Album, ‘The Art Of The Lie’

The 11-track record is out in June

John Grant has shared details of his first album in three years, The Art Of The Lie.

Spanning 11 tracks, work began on the record in autumn 2022 after Grant met producer and composer Ivor Guest at a Grace Jones show in London earlier that year and invited him to work on his next album. In a statement, he said it was "in part about the lies people espouse and the brokenness it breeds, and how we are warped and deformed by these lies", citing the popularity of Donald Trump among the Christian Nationalist movement and white supremacist groups in the US as an example.

The Art Of The Lie is preceded by lead track ‘It’s A Bitch’, which you can watch a video for above. Speaking about the track, Grant said: "It was a blast making this track, which is just about having fun with words, synths and dope rhythms and basslines, and also making fun of post-COVID malaise. Plus, people get to ponder what a ‘hesher’ is. I loved going to the arcade in the 80s and watching smokin’-hot heshers hold court while playing Tempest, Stargate, Robotron and Asteroids, and while also blasting Iron Maiden and Rush on their Walkmans."

Bella Union will release The Art Of The Lie on June 14, 2024.
