John Frusciante To Release Jungle-Inspired Album, ‘Maya’

It's dedicated to the Red Hot Chilli Peppers guitarist's cat and will be released on Venetian Snares' Timesig label

John Frusciante is releasing an album inspired by UK breakbeat, jungle and hardcore.

Titled Maya, it’s the Red Hot Chilli Peppers guitarist’s first instrumental electronic album, but comes off the back of a number of experiments with the genre, including a 2016 EP for Acid Test, Foregrow. Above, you can listen to lead track ‘Amethblowl’.

Maya is dedicated to Frusciante’s cat and will be released on Venetian Snares’ Timesig label. He first got into Venetian Snares’ work after seeing the producer play live at an Autechre-curated ATP event in 2003.

"I don’t have that interest in singing or writing lyrics like I used to," Frusciante says of his shift towards working with electronic music. "The natural thing when I’m by myself now, is to just make music like the stuff being released this year. I really love the back and forth with machines and the computer."

Timesig will release Maya on October 23, 2020.
