The Quietus’ editor John Doran is now nearly halfway through with his May book tour in promotion for Jolly Lad, his memoir recounting his recovery from alcoholism, substance abuse and mental illness. Performing tonight in Nottingham’s Broadway cinema, he’ll be reading excerpts from his book with musical (and presumably noisy) accompaniment from two tQ favourites: Kjetil Nernes of Årabrot, John’s tourmate for the month, and Nik Void of Factory Floor. Adding further to the spectacle, Void has contributed a short film, Spiral Arms, specifically for the project.
John’s co-editor Luke Turner will also be presenting three short films from his Quietus At Leisure series, featuring a look at Stephen Morris’ (Joy Division and New Order) penchant for tank collecting, Steve Ignorant’s (Crass) adventures in lifeboating and Cosey Fanni Tutti’s (Throbbing Gristle) passion for gardening. Luke will also be interviewing John onstage, while you’ll be able to get copies of the book signed after the event. Tickets are only £5 and for further information on a night sure to be sufficiently packed with cheery anecdotes on black holes, ghosts and Nottingham’s bus timetables, visit here.
