A fabled collection of John Coltrane live recordings dating back to the 60s are set to get their first official release this year.
The recordings featured on Tiberi Tapes were captured at jazz clubs in New York and Philadelphia between 1961 and 1965 by saxophonist Frank Tiberi, but had been stored away in a private collection until now. They will now be unleashed to the world as part of celebrations of what would have been Coltrane’s 100th birthday this September, with an initial exclusive release scheduled for Record Store Day on 18 April and a wider release to follow in September.
Record label Impulse!’s ‘Coltrane 100’ celebrations will also take in reissues of classic records such as Ascension, Africa/Brass and Impressions; a best-of compilation highlighting his work from 1957 and 1958; and a sound installation put together by hi-fi specialist Devon Turnbull at New York’s Cooper Hewitt. The John and Alice Coltrane Home in Dix Hills, New York, and the John Coltrane House in Philadelphia will also open to the public for the first time this year.
To mark the announcement of the ‘Coltrane 100’ activities, the label has also shared a new video for the late artist’s ‘Acknowledgement’, from A Love Supreme. Directed by Kamasi Washington and AG Rojas, the visual features a recreation of of New Jersey’s Van Gelder Studios on the day that A Love Supreme was recorded there. Watch the video below.
Impulse! will release Tiberi Tapes on 18 April 2026, and September 2026.
