John Cale’s ‘Paris 1919’ and ‘The Academy In Peril’ Set for First-Time Reissues

The new editions come with additional bonus tracks

John Cale’s albums Paris 1919 and The Academy In Peril are getting their first official reissues courtesy of the artist’s now label home of Domino.

Both records have been specially remastered by recording engineer Heba Kadry for their new editions. The reissue of Paris 1919 will take in new liner notes, previously unreleased outtakes and a new recording, titled ‘Fever Dream 2024: You’re A Ghost’, while the updated version of The Academy In Peril will include bonus track ‘Temper’.

Both reissues are set to be made available across CD, vinyl and digital formats, and follow on from the release earlier this year of Cale’s latest studio album, POPtical Illusion.

In a statement, Cale said: “Revisiting work from the past is a double-edged sword for me. Of course, it’s bound to happen when you’ve been making music for 60 years or so… What’s unique about this process with Domino, is their desire to get it right. Not [to] merely reissue something for the sake of an anniversary or racking up a catalogue favourite, but finding new treasures and highlighting what made it special in the first place.

“After hearing the test pressings, it occurred to me that the new mastering was a major part of how these works will be presented, rather than simply being preserved. There are moments of clarity and even a laugh or two had by revisiting not only the music, but recalling the sessions (and antics) that made up what became these two recordings. It is my pleasure to share these with you… again.”

Originally released in February 1973, Paris 1919 was Cale’s third solo studio album, and took influence from orchestral-based music. The Academy In Peril preceded it in July 1972 and is mostly instrumental.

Domino will release Paris 1919 Deluxe Edition and The Academy In Peril on November 15, 2024.
