John Cale has announced the special guests who will join him to perform The Velvet Underground’s 1967 debut album The Velvet Underground & Nico ‘reimagined’ in full in Liverpool.
Celebrating the landmark album’s 50th birthday, the Liverpool date will feature Fat White Family, Wild Beasts, Gruff Rhys, Clinic and The Kills performing with the musician.
The show takes place on 26 May, as part of this year’s Liverpool Sound City Festival. Cale will perform on a bespoke open-air stage in the heart of Liverpool’s docklands, facing outwards towards the Atlantic Ocean and New York, where the album was made.
Cale, a founding member of The Velvet Underground along with Lou Reed, said of the line-up: "It’s such a privilege to have this calibre of artistry about — its not that they fit the legend, rather the legend is part of each of them. Stand back Liverpool – here we come!!"
Cale will also be appearing at the festival in conversation the following Saturday, while a Velvet Underground themed disco will continue late into the night.
