Jo Bevan Reveals New EP, ‘Born Ready’

The Desperate Journalist frontwoman's new solo record is out today via The state51 Conspiracy

Jo Bevan, vocalist of post-punk outfit Desperate Journalist, has released her debut solo EP, Born Ready.

Out today (February 22) via The state51 Conspiracy, the release sees the UK musician entering the realms of experimental pop and electronica, a sound far removed from that of her band. You can listen to the EP’s title track above.

"The song is the result of me playing around with a Volca Sample sequencer and trying to familiarise myself with it," Bevan said of the track. "I still don’t quite know how it works.

"I eventually wrote a simple tune around my first favourite beat which then evolved into this sort of anxious quiet banger. It’s nice to be able to do something more on the pure pop side as opposed to the slightly more alternative music we do in Desperate Journalist."

‘Born Ready’ started life as a special release for tQ subscribers in Summer 2022, with the EP including remixes by UKAEA, Oh The Gilt (tQ’s own John Doran and producer John Tatlock) and Ekoplekz. "I love them," Bevan said of the reworks. "The Oh The Gilt one is a Balearic masterpiece! I don’t feel precious about the music so the main thing I was excited about was hearing what parts other people were going to pick up on as the most prominent, particularly if people really fuck up the vocals."

Born Ready is out now on The state51 Conspiracy.
